Ending The Cycle Of Depression
Many people deal with feelings of depression from time to time. Cyclical, major depression is a totally different matter. According to the CDC, approximately 17% of Americans will suffer from depression at some point in their life. Over time, the symptoms of depression can alter your view of life, affecting both you and the people around you. It creates a negative outlook that can decrease your ability to enjoy your life.
Improving your life with Neurofeedback
Research shows that depression symptoms can be neurological, not psychological in origin. For example, an excess level of Alpha brainwave energy in the left side of the brain can lead to depression tendencies. By balancing the brain, Neurofeedback can eliminate the source of depression – the brain itself.
How does Neurofeedback training accomplish this?
Neurofeedback training uses your natural ability to learn in order to help you think in a happier, more productive way. Known as “operant conditioning’ this is a gentle, relaxing approach that can eliminate the negative brainwave imbalances that can cause you to feel depressed.
A training session consists of 30 minutes of watching a movie or video that you choose yourself. During the training we will be providing continuous feedback to you in the form of audio and visual changes, based on your real-time brainwave activity. Two sensors, lightly placed on your scalp, provide the data for this process. Each time you drop into a depressive thought pattern, (usually measured as an excess in Alpha brainwave energy) the movie dims and the sound diminishes briefly.
Over time, your brain naturally learns to stop having these depressive thoughts, allowing the movie to stay in focus. This actually helps your brain to form new neural pathways that result in a happier, more positive outlook, because the brainwave imbalance has been corrected.
This new, positive outlook is yours to keep!
The new neural connections developed during the training typically remain long after your last session in our office. Think about it this way – when you were first learning to swim, or maybe play an instrument, you did not know how to do it. However, with practice, and the coaching of your parents or maybe a teacher, you learned how to master the new skill.
Neurofeedback works the same way – once you learn how to think more clearly and positively, the new pathways actually grow stronger with practice after your last Neurofeedback session is complete.
